Design

In my opinion, the best musical instruments were made before mass production became common place. They were designed to be played, not merely used as decoration. That said, I believe that the quality of these instruments was so high because they were only made by people who loved music enough to make them.

Sound

The quality of the sound produced by a saxophonist depends largely upon the player behind the instrument. For example, if you compare two players playing exactly the same note, one might produce a sound that is much brighter and higher pitched than another. The reason for this difference is due to the choice of mouthpieces and reeds used by each musician. A saxophonists' mouthpieces can vary greatly in size, shape, color, material, and weight, and these choices affect how the saxophones respond to air pressure. In addition, the type of reed used determines the timbre (tone) of the instrument. While the saxophones themselves may not change, the differences between the instruments can make an enormous impact on the overall sound.

Consistency

I own six Yanakawa saxophons that have been build over the past thirty plus year. The consistancy of these instruments is amazing. As good as the old ones are, the new models just keep getting incrementaly better and better. The wO sxophones come in two mdoels: Professional and the more expen$ive elitc.

With these horns, there are some important differences between the two types. Let’s take a look at a few of them.

Build Quality

As an audio engineer, I can say without a doubt that Yanagisawa Saxophones are the best made saxophones available. It's really in a class of its own. Doing repairs or adjusting them is a pleasurable experience compared to other instruments where sometimes it can be a little frustrating.

Construction

Now perhaps the most important difference between the Professional and the Elite models is that the latter ones are made with ribbed-to -the-bodies, whereas the former ones are made with post-to-the-bodies. What does this actually imply? Well, the former ones can swivel and rotate around the axis they're connected to, whereas the later ones cannot. That's why we say that the Elite models are superior to the Professional models.

The Professional models with post-to-bodys just have each individual post welded onto the saxhorn. This results in less metals. Theer saxhorn actually has less metals on it than the more expensivesaxhorn. This can have a miniscule effect of how the horn feelswhenplayed. Whether that differenceisbetter ornot isup to the individualplayer. Ifwe lookbackandlookat someof theoldvintagehornslikeConnsandBueschersMade-in-the-USASaxhorns,thesehornshadthepost-to-bodiesconstuctionandtheyplaysgreat.

Ergonomics

As a player, it’s no contest. No matter what game system you play, if you own an Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, or any other gaming console, you know how much fun it is to play games with controllers that feel good in your hand. In addition to being comfortable, they also offer great control and precision. These controllers are not only designed to make playing games easier, but they can also help improve your skills. Whether you’re learning how to play new games or improving your old favorites, these controllers will give you the edge you need.

Neck

The necks on both the Elite and Professional models are made out of solid mahogany wood. They feature an octave button that sits under the strings and is pressed down to raise the pitch. The Elite guitars also feature a floating tremolo bridge that allows the guitar to play freely without any fret buzzing. Both models come equipped with a set of Seymour Duncan humbucking pickups.

Stability

The WO Elite comes with double arm levers on the lower B and C key. Adding an additional lever adds another layer of stability to the keyboard. However, if your hands are bigger than mine (and they probably are), then having two levers might make sense. But if you're just starting out, you may find that one lever works perfectly fine.

It seems that this is something that they did a long time ago because there were issues with other saxophones but now their own build quality has made this obsolete.

There is also an additional connector on the left pinky side of the instrument which allows for connection between the C# key and the B key. This can be considered a'sloppy' design on other saxophones.

But once again, Yanki has made their own innovation obsolete. With the professional machines I own that do not have that little gadget, I would never notice any change switching back and forth between these 2 keys. It works just the same.

On the Professional models there isn't a pearl on the G sharp key like there is on the Elite models. I didn't think this would be an issue for me, but I don't even notice the differences between them.

Intonation

When buying saxophone, people often ask “Does it sound good?”

You're right; saxophonists don't always play in perfect pitch. However, they usually play better than most people think.

I've never had a horn that can be tuned perfectly without having to make changes. That doesn't really exist. It's just the nature of an acoustic instrument that has a lot of different acoustic factors that compromise the sound. Having said that, Yamagisawa has minimized the effect of those acoustic factors. Which means we get probably the most consistent tone and intonation quality of any saxophones being made today.

FAQs

1. Why Won't My Mouthpiece Fit?

The mouth piece slides over the cork on the neck of your saxophone. If you're having difficulty, don't compel it to fit. Instead, find your cork grease-- it looks like chapstick (yet it isn't edible!)-- layer the cork lightly, and also rub it in gently with your fingers. Afterwards, your mouthpiece must move far more easily onto the neck of your tool.
